The IOSH Managing Safely Certificate course is the UK's most popular and accessible course for anyone who needs health and safety training. It is generally taught over four days, which can be delivered over a number of weeks on a day-release basis, or in a four-day block. Candidates are formally assessed by means of an examination at the end of the course and a practical workplace-based assessment.

Candidates who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Recognise the ethical, legal and financial context of the IOSH Managing Safely Course
  • Apply basic management principles and practices to safety and health issues as part of a total management strategy.
  • Set achievable safety and health objectives and plan and implement courses of action to achieve those objectives.
  • Recognise safety and health hazards present in the workplace.
  • Carry out and record basic assessments of the risks associated with workplace hazards, and recommend suitable control measures.
  • Take account of risks arising from ergonomic factors.
  • Ensure that adequate information, training and supervision are provided for employees.
  • Investigate an accident or incident involving injury or damage to determine the causes and take appropriate actions.

Understanding of the course material is evaluated by means of a 45-minute written assessment paper consisting of 20 multi-format questions and a practical assessment.

Successful candidates will receive the IOSH Managing Safely Certificate.
